| As
a group of friends and neighbours living in the Balrath Woods area,
our aim is to promote an appreciation of the environmental and social
value of our woodlands and to protect this important part of our
natural heritage for the future. A world without woods is a world
without healing for the human spirit. More than ever, we must treasure
the few old woods we have as sacred places.
Forests are complex
ecosystems and important sources of biodiversity. A healthy woodland
environment is made up of countless and varied plants and animals,
which have adapted to each other and lived together over thousands
of years. Large woods can contain up to 5000 species of plants and
animals. The significance of fungi should never be underestimated.
Ecological and Scientific
values are concerned with conserving rare and unusual flora and
fauna, but all nature is rare.
